many thanks for your help :) much appreciated :)
Thanks for the site. It really helps me support our system.
First of all, let me just say what a great site you have! I see your planning to offer stuff that goes in /usr/local as well as /opt; this is a good idea IMHO!
Well done mate and keep it up ..
Thanks again, and Great Site!
You and the Free Software Foundation are the bright spots in a dark world of monopolistic software thievery.
Thanks again !
Superb ... thanks.
Whenever I need something you are my number one to check !!!
Try:
http://smc.vnet.net/Solaris_2.5_x86.html
This site has a raft of pre-compiled SPARC code, plus pointers on the URL given to x86 ports.
Worth a look...
(ps. The page kicks ass, thanks again. Saved me lots of time.)
Just when I got it going and thought I would send you another quick message.... Presto!!!; there was your reply.
Yes indeed, it was the ole "LD_LIBRARY_PATH".
Now I shall go after editing the zillion postscript documents that have been waiting on me for a month or better.
You are a great guy.
Thanks & best regards.
THANKS!
Thanks for putting together such a useful packaging. I particularly like your use of frames on the homepage.
Thanks again for running such a great site.
It is one thing to just install packages created by others, but my own sysadmin paranoia causes me to want to do it myself. I had never even attempted to do it before.
Let me know if there is ever anything that I can do to help the Solaris Freeware project.
Again, just wanted to say thanks. Your help was immeasurable.
Thanks for helping this Solaris newbie... :)
I would like to direct your attention to the web site smc.vnet.net that provides packaged free software for SUN Solaris workstations.
I was looking for some free software tools but could NOT find anything useful on SUN's web site www.sun.com. Fortunately, I found http://smc.vnet.net/Solaris_2.5.html and its pre-compiled GNU software packages work without any problem on my SPARC 20.
Free value-added services such as those provided by smc.vnet.net for SUN user community benefit Sun Microsystems because they promote the sales of Sun computers. The web site smc.vnet.net deserves Sun Microsystem's generous support.
The SUN package installation listed on your site have saved me many hours from the tedious C compilations.
After so many days looking after pre-compiled softwares for my Solaris platform, I finally found my Eden !
Thank you very much !
Thank you very much.
Again, thanks muchly for the site.
-Thank's!
Many thanks.
You have a great site!
Thank you . . . .
http://smc.vnet.net/Solaris_2.5.html
John, let me suggest an easier way. Get gzip in a binary form which is
already ready to install. Visit
I am able to install it successfully with your help.
It helped us a lot to set up a dynamic http server who converts old
ascii X25-documentation to html, on an old SPARC-2 station that would
be unused otherwise.
The FAQ helped a lot too. It seems to me we had all the troubles you describe,
in order you wrote them.
Thanks alot and keep up the nice work on sunfreeware.com.
Matter of fact, I am actually trying to install *your* GCC package now.
Excellent site! Very helpful! You've gotten my IPX much closer to what
I want it to be.
Thanks ...
Thank you so much!
regards!
You and your colleagues have really provided the user community with a
great asset in the Free ware library. You all deserve kudos!
Thanks.
Indeed! Your site saved me a lot of time.
Just wanted to let you know. Thanks!
This worked great! I've been searching for a precompiled version of this
for some time now. I've bookmarked both your page and this one. Keep up
the good work.
Keep up the good work!
I am not a unix wizard, nor am I moron .... BUT, there are SOME things
that as I spoke with people who are more skilled at unix, more specificly
Solaris, there are some things that are it seems to me are just known. For
example what sym links should be where, what libs should be where,
etc.etc.etc... I could not find anything that told me what should be
linked with what, or what compilers were needed to compile xyz. That was
of course until I stumbled upon your site. Whats this I say? ...Already
compiled Binaries of my favorite (ok so not ALL of my favs, but hey :)
... Programs, are already compiled and READY TO GO!.... WOWHO!.... 30
Megs, and more then one drive space full message on the console latter, I
am a happy person :) ........
There are some quirks I ran into, for example your Xftp pkg does not do
the right sym links to a lib, then again I don't have all the links down
pat :( ..... I did finally run into your faq (don't ask :) ..... via
another web page!.... Sure enough, it pointed out a few more paths I
needed, and some other interesting things :) .......
Hmm... must find a guide... HINT HINT :)
*Scratching head and wondering how you got past that seemingly
insoluable snprintf compile issue*
Two more things while I've got you on the line, so to speak...
1) smc.vnet.net is the coolest site to come down the pike since the Irish
invented beer. You (and your assistants, if there are any) are positively
wonderful and deserve all the kudos Sun can muster!
2) If you're going to be at the River Center in San Antonio for the Usenix
security gig, you've got a few beers (or pizzas) coming on my tab.
A long time fan of smc.vnet.net and its' Wizards...
One of the things we use here is your port of Samba. Samba's a
wonderful thing, and has made my users mighty happy. They don't know
that it is Samba making them happy, and thus I get the credit for it,
which is fine.
Thanks for your role in SunSITE is appropriate as well.
Thank you very much! It's successful now.
I have installed some of your other stuff, and it works just fine!
Had I even thought that I might trouble you with a request, I would
have asked for packages built for /usr/local instead of /opt, and
they're already here!
http://smc.vnet.net/Solaris_2.5.html
Lots of cool stuff
http://smc.vnet.net/pkgadd.html
Thanks.
Thanks a lot for your help in this and I hope to one day have a mirror of
your site here at the University.
By providing your work we were able to configure a Sparc-20 running Solaris in
much less time than would have been required otherwise. This is allowing us to
spend much more time focusing on what we do well.
Steve, your work is important and greatly appreciated. Please let me know if I
can be of service to you in the future.
They saved me a great deal of time when installing some new servers for
software development.
Thanks .. don't know what I would do without a huge bankroll for Sun
Soft products .. appreciate all you do .. teach us low-enders and
someday we can feed back really useful knowledge ..
Cheers Steve, keep it going.
We have used bash, gcc, sed and perl. My particular favorite is
perl which I have used to write a number of system routines and web
front ends with which to control/configure my servers remotely
(eg create email accounts on new domains having set up the
dns automatically on receipt of message from internic/nominet)
Thanks again for the GREAT web site. It has truly been a life-saver.
Thank You AGAIN~!!!
Keep up the good work.
Among several compilers and tools, we select GNU's gcc and gdb as
the major C++ compiler, and ORACLE's database and ProC pre-compiler for
data storage. We are using yours gcc version 2.7.2. and gdb version
4.15.1. Some support programs like texinfo, gzip, etc, are also in use.
The monitoring module is already done, and in production for several months
now, with very good results. The second major module, that is responsible
for monitoring the quality of phone calls is in prototype phase.
We use your version of FSF's programs every day, and really enjoy it, thank you.
And keep the excellent work.
Your efforts are appreciated.
Thanks for performing an important service.
THANK YOU!
PS: I don't know who pays you to keep guys like me successful, but thanks to
them, too.
I regularly grab packages for 2.5.1 & 2.6 and roll them out to production
systems. Main packages are: lsof, top, tcsh, traceroute, less, gzip - these
are the ones which tend to go "everywhere". Other misc packages too, of
course (Ghostscript, Samba, I could go on & on... :-).
Getting GCC in package stream format is a MAJOR boon.
Thanks again for all the work. There are many out here in Solaris user
land that appreciate it.
I just want to thank you again and again...
Having this software ported to Solaris 2.6 and installing as a package is amazing!!! The last time I worked on Solaris and to get tools running was a few years ago. At that time the only option (minus a few programs that were on Sunsite) was to get the source for a GNU program and compile it. What this meant was many wasted hours duplicating work that other had already done. Furthermore, installing wasn't very easy either.
You guys (or just you) have made all of this obsolete. Have world class software on Solaris is now as easy as NT!!!!
Thanks, your site is a real time saver and great resource.
Again, many thanks for the best site on the net!
The subject says it all...
Again, many thanks!
Et a bientot !
Thanks again for setting this up!
I wish there was something I could donate back, but Im not good enough
on SunOs yet - we're running what INFORMIX says is one of the the
largest Sun-based data-warehouses in the S/Hemisphere, on a Sun
e4000 8-way symmetric processor, with 1GB disk cache, 2 GB main
ram, and buckets of DASD !!!
anyway, good work, keep it up (schmucks like me need people like you)
This (and the faq) got me up and running. The listing of sun pkg's needed
was especially helpful.
SunFreeware Fan
I just found out about this sunfreeware.com from
SunServer magazine. I like it! Keep up the
good work.
Keep up the great work.
Your 2.6 packages are going to save me days of work.
Thanks for your great site!
Just want to let you know I really like your work.
Thank you for your help.
I have now a base installation consisting of your packages that can be
applied to any of my machines - from scratch to a fully working
workstation/server now takes around 1 to 2 hours!! Including time to
install Solaris!!
well done and keep up the good work!
It works perfectly fine...
thanks a lot and keep up the good work! more power to SUN!!!
I've had your URL bookmarked for years and feel terrible I've taken
so long to let you know how much I appreciate it.
It is cool to have a person like you to help us!!!
I appreciate your maintenance of the site.
Thank you very much!
Coffee paid for you in NY.
synthetique , precis , un site indispensable !
Groovy...exactly what I was looking for.
Thanks!
Thanks to you I was able to download what I needed, burn a CD cart it out to
the site and wala instant developers station, thanks.
Thanks for maintaining this good site.
And the 2. thing. Why everyone needs to compile the software from the
source, if there is a reliable source of precompiled binaries on the
net. That saves a lot of time for everyone else, and makes the platform
more attractive to the users.
Thanx and keep up the good work.
Check out
http://www.sunfreeware.com
Steven Christensen has a very good writeup on creating packages.
http://smc.vnet.net/pkgadd.html
It helped me a lot.
I have installed your Solaris 2.6 packages
and they seem to work pretty well.
Once Again: Great Job!!
THANKS AGAIN FOR A WONDERFUL SITE!!!
Thanks again for your great site ... there is no way I
could have built the entire gimp distribution and
associated libraries.
downloaded it, did pkagadd -d gcc-2.8.1-opt and it installed fine, and
worked straight off.
Thanks a million.
I've been running all Linux systems here for the past year or so... just
yesterday someone told me about the Solaris offer. So, well, I signed
up, and it's on its way.
I intend to use the system for more-or-less "educational" purposes...
I'm doing a large project on "unix networking" (loads of fun). I know it
would greatly annoy my "linux" friends, but I'm now tending to switching
everything I have to a different system. Heh, I've vowed never again to
buy an intel based system (saving up for an ultra5). Well, anyway... I
really just need one thing... and that is a nice office suite. Is there
a free (heh) or "economic" solution for Solaris (don't say TeX, hehe)?
Also, since I'll be in the process of learning a new system, could you
recommend any books or sources of info for a new Solaris user? Oh, that
reminds me... is there some form of linux binary emulation (just
curious)? Ok, well, thanks... and I hope to drop by and make use of all
those ports... maybe do some of my own ;)
Thanks again!
I am a professional programmer rooted in C/C++ on Solaris platforms. I just wanted to say thank you for putting so much work into such a fine site (Sunfreeware.com). It certainly makes my "hobby-programming" at home much easier.
PS. I am thrilled to have found this site, appreciative of your work, and
amazed at the quick response.
Tell your manager that your efforts with the GNU packages at
Sunfreeware.com make Sun look very good to its Hadco Derry customers.
By the way, sunfreeware.com has saved my life a couple of times
already...
Thank you, its a wonderful project.
Your site is a valuable asset.
I have successfully downloaded, installed the gzip and top utilities. They
run great on our system now.
Thank you again.
My $0.02
Finally I installed gcc-2.8.1-local... and it works very well!!!
Your site is very useful!
Thanks for maintaining such a great site!
Thanks a lot!
How cool do I look when everything gets going within an hour? Many thanks - if you ever come to this cold and wet part of the world I can offer you a pint.
Thank you very much for the fabulous
site! Because it is.
More power to you,
Thank you again for your great help, you have no idea how much you've
helped us. :)
Excellent site... A complete lifesaver!!!! ("Thank you!!" * 1000000)
Keep up the great work!
Donations for maintenance can be mailed where??
Thanks again for the info,
1000 times thanks :))))
I just found out about you -- what a huge improvement in the ease of
getting free software.
Great web site. Well organized and well documented.
Thanks!
As Garth would say, "Calvin Cooledge!"
Keep up the good work and thanks again!
Thanks for all the work.
Keep up the good work.
Thanks a lot once again.
I know where to turn now in case i need another software package!!! :)
Thanks again.
Most of what we have implemented installs in /usr/local, which is precisely
what we want.
Keep up the good work!
Many thanks and happy new year !
Once again, I tip my head to you and the immensely useful site you
are maintaining.
It has saved me a lot of time, and I have been able to compile myself
plenty of other (GNU or not) programs with your gcc package.
Your packages are really well done : congratulations !
It works beautifully.
Thank you Very Very Much!
Being a long timer on Solaris x86 I can only say that your site provided
me with the tools (specially gcc!!) that enabled me to continue using
Solaris with a very big success in several jobs I had till now.
Keep up the good work.
Keep up the good work!
Thanks for the leg work...
I wanted to say thanks for the how-to. I work with many different UNIX
boxes and when I looked at the man pages for the Sun I wasn't quite
understanding the whole thing. Your how-to as really
cleared things up.
Thanks for you time.
hope someone does something nice for you tomorrow
I'm sure I'll be back frequently.
So, thank you very much!!!
i'm a unix-lover, and have always felt that its non-acceptance by the
general public has everything to do with there being little or no useful
software, readily available, and easily installable. our marketplace is
filled with examples of how technical superiority does not mean
marketshare - ease of use drives the market, period. bill gates may
have the world's worst o/s, but he has the world's best bank account.
your site makes it easy for us unix-lovers to get the software we need
to make our computers useful. your efforts to pre-package them are not
unnoticed, and i'd like to personally thank you. i've downloaded and
installed numerous solaris7 packages from your site. you are providing
a wonderful service to the internet world. THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK
YOU!!
More seriously, your site is very well designed and I was really
happy to find a large part of the GNU distribution. It saved me
some days of compiling. Thanks for this 'must go there' site.
Please keep up the good work.
Always know there is someone out there in Internet land that really
appreciates your time!!! Thank you!! I'm sure there are many others who
feel the same...
thank you very much.
I come from a Linux/FreeBSD background and have recently bought an Ultra 5
with the idea of migrating more servers to SUNs.
I must say I have hated Solaris 7 from the very second I got the Ultra out
of the box...
What's the point of an OS without gzip and/or a compiler???
I have been given your URL by a guy in SUN's UK support team and I think it
is turning into a proper machine quite nicely... ;-)
Anyway, keep up the good work, you made my day.
I always used to swear by source no matter what. That's here too!
If nothing else, the fact that you have gcc binaries would make the site
more than worthwhile! Keep it up...
Thank you, thank you,
I'm just getting my feet wet with the Solaris X86 free version after
lots of experience in the linux world. I was very surprised to find
that Solaris doesn't come a compiler!
Anyway, a friend of mine pointed me to your site, and I was able
to get up and running quickly, thanks to you. Thanks again for
providing this incredibly useful resource!
This page has really helped me alot!
So thats all thank you very much and keep on going :-)
Once again thank you for your time.
The Sun Freeware site is absolutely a lifesaver. I've used several of
the precompiled packages you put together (esp. gcc 2.8.1 ... compiling
gcc is usually pretty ugly), and they all work flawlessly. I just got
done compiling several CPAN perl modules using your 2.8.1 gcc
implementation (and installing into your perl 5.005_02 installation!)
with no problems.
Thanks for assembling this site and the work you've put into it to make
it easy to find what you want. Your site layout is EXCELLENT ... don't
change it one bit!
Your recipe works like a charm (well, at least it did for getting bash up
and running, i'll try it on other packages also). [I understand your
caution about gcc, but i believe we can set a few environment variables to
take care of matters.]
This is a real help for us, because our sysadmins are very busy, and if we
can evaluate a package before getting them to install it, it saves a lot of
false steps.
Thanks again.
Anyways, I just wanted to compliment you on your site it's probably the most useful sites I've seen.
At first, I thought I would only use it to overcome the missing cc and
crt*.o from Solaris 2.x, but you make it so easy to use and keep fairly
current, so it has become my first choice when I need something. I
work on many different machines, mostly run by people that don't care
about the tools you provide, and it is nice to be able to get
productive in minutes instead of taking a day to compile and set up.
Again, thanks.
Thanks for putting up a terrific resource for all us overworked admins around the globe!
We also like the 2.5 availability. We're getting to 7 RSN.
I appreciate your taking time to look and respond. It ended
up well.
I appreciate everything you are doing,
In my experience that one's far and away the best.
A year and a half ago, I landed a job running a handful of Sun
workstations and servers, with absolutely no prior Sun experience. I
had administered UNIX systems for an ISP, but these were SCO, FreeBSD,
and Linux systems. I had come to rely heavily on having a compiler
handy to compile "just one more add-on" as well as having a large
library of tools like Perl, TCL/Tk and such.
As I started a new Sun job, I was suddenly confronted with whole new
world, but I soon was led to your site by the many references in the
rest of the Sun community. A year and a half later, I stopped by "to
grab workman real quick" for a new box, and thought I would let you
know how indispensable your site and your work has become to me
personally.
THIS IS A GREAT SITE !!!
I love your Sunfreeware.com site - and in fact it saved my company about
$7,000. We were going to pay a third party to compile and install a good
amount of software that was already compiled on your site. Thank you so
much, this is definitely an invaluable resource.
Thanks a lot once again !!!
Had to say thank you for the incredibly useful site. I got the site
URL from the Solaris FAQ. Glad I stopped by. You've done a great
service to the Solaris world. I found several packages
I needed.....plus the info to install them. Keep up the excellent
work....PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!
Signed,
A Happy Solaris 7-X86 Camper,
Whoever came up with the idea of Sun
freeware should be given a medal and those that
are making it work more so.
Thanks for all your hard work in maintaining the Solaris Binary Site. With
Sun's lobotomized compilerless software, they've put a big hurt on us
newbies. Thanks for putting all this good stuff out there.
I've "always" thought solaris would become the top-notch OS that it has --
and always will be.
Great job on your sunfreeware.com, the site is growing rapidly.
May your fridge be always full of beer ;-)
Thanks, a million again you wonderful person !
You're a champ. I'll give it a try.
Now I have no excuse to install other packages.
Many Thanks for this site,
you help and helped a lot
For sysadmins like me that have no time nor interest in compiling third
party programs (which usually involves debugging other people's code) your
site is a true blessing.
Thanks for running one of the best Sun software collections!
and thanks. I've been instructed to put bind on a Sun Sparc4 we had
hanging around. After going through the drill of installing Solaris 7,
I found to my dismay that a C compiler is not included (I'm new to Sun,
I learned on Linux). Not to mention no gzip, wget, perl or bash.
Thank god I found your site. Otherwise I'd be weeks late and dollars
short.
Thanks again.
Thank you for all your efforts, I know time is not free so I am really very
grateful to you.
Thanks again and keep up the great work!
I've long found your Solaris 2.5.1 binaries an incredibly useful resource
as I often find myself on a bare-bones Solaris system without the
essential utilities.
Thank you very much Mr. Steve Christensen,
Thanks again !
We'd like to thank you a lot for your distrib' of gcc.
First I want to say thanks for putting out Solaris 2.6 packages of the GNU
stuff. It makes my life easier.
Thanks very much for making these packages available!
Thanks Steve, I removed pkg with cd to /var/sadm/pkg and pkgrm GNUperl5.
I had an older GNUperl5 (Solaris 2.5) version in there. I thought that
removing files from /opt will do the job but pkg manager wants it it's
own way. Anyway, thanks for a suggestion and good software. It's so much
easier for sysadmin to just install already compiled version of
software. Being a solo sysadmin is not easy these days (ever was?) with
so many Win95/NT users running loose.
Thanks for the great Solaris resource,
I have found your site very helpful. As a novice syadmin I have sometimes spent days trying to get a software program to compile and work properly. When I use the packages provided by you, installation is a no-brainer, and software administration is as easy as admintool. Also, the Sun I administer is full of applications installed in hodge-podge manner and in various sometimes hidden directories. To have applications precompiled in Sun compatible pkg format is not only a help for me, but for future users who may manage this machine. Any chance you can get a version of netpbm up on your page? I have been trying to setup our Sun for the UIUC Cyberprof program; and with the exception of imagemagic (the author graciously helped me on this one), and netpbm, all the packages required have been available on your site.
Nice work on the one-stop package shop. Its been big time saver.
Thanks Steve, I didn't know that. BTW, I want to thank you for running
that nice Solaris S/W site. I have used it often, and it is the best
source I have ever seen.
Thanks and keep up the excellent work.
Excellent archive, Steve -- this gave me enough confidence to buy a
SPARCstation 5.
The Solaris freeware site is great!
I have a copy of your "Creating pkgadd Software Packages under Solaris
2.5". It has been extremely helpful. I am a release engineer, and have
been given the task of using pkgadd, pkginfo, pkgmk, etc., to produce an
installation package for our application on Solaris 2.5. I am not a unix
programmer or sys admin. I have printed off the man pages as you
suggested.
thank you for your wonderful site. We were caught between a rock and a
hard spot with Sun's latest idea of ways to reduce costs (i.e. unbundle
the abridged C compiler) and your site saved the day.
Thanks!
P.S. Great site !.
Your site's a life saver. I've installed a number of
the packages for Solaris. Great work!
THANKS for your Solaris 2.5 freeware page - it's just about saved my
sanity!
First I want to thank you for all that time and dedication to
make those useful programs for all the Solaris 2.x users.
Great job!!!
This e-mail is long overdue. I really appreciated the quick response, I'm sorry
I didn't do the same. What you provided was a big help in getting this project
off to a good start. Thanks again.
Thanks for compiling the 2.6 stuff and making it install
in /usr/local. I recently inherited a Classic and compiling
gcc, etc would have been painfully slow. I prefer installing
software off the net in /usr/local.
thanks a lot for your prompt response!
I found the x86 site.
Thanks for the great site. I've used it several times and have been very
pleased.
I find smc.vnet.net a very useful archive for people like me who
need to install Solaris stuff.
Great page. It's been very useful to me.
I wouldn't have been able to get my home SPARC working without you!
Your web is very helpful for me to reconstruct our Station 5 in the lab.
Thank you very much for your effort.
"Reports from users indicate that anything below 2.7.2.3 without the
patches installed in this version and without fixincludes run in the
proper way will not compile some programs."
Hi and thank you for a very nice and useful site!
First let me say "Thanks!" for your excellent site. It's been really useful
to us here.
Steve, thanks a lot!
I think your site is great! It's nice to be able to get all of the most popular
packages for different reasons at one place. Keep up the good work!
Once again, thank you for your efforts to make so much software easily
available to others.
The use of this stuff
in packaged format really does tip the balance when I decide whether to
use something like Linux, or Solaris for an 'easy install'.
Great site you have. Looks good too.
Thanks!
Your site and project is really helping.
Finding your archive some time ago, was like X-mas and Easter together.
Thanx for all the work u have done..........
By the way thank you very much and "Merry Xmas to you"
By the way, I recommend your work at URL:
http://starbase.neosoft.com/~claird/comp.unix.misc/unix_binaries.html.
First, thanks for running your precompiled freeware for SPARC webpage,
its very helpful.
Move the eyes on http://sunfreeware.com. On this site there are many
useful free-software program, ready-to-run.
Just wanted to say thanks for going through the trouble of compiling
everything for Solaris.
I was just out visiting you site with Solaris 2.5 freeware (good site by
the way). Much appreciated! Thanks.
I saw your manual pages for making packages. They are really good.
Thanks for the outstanding site and all your efforts.
Great site, Keep up the good work!
It was a very good ideas to provide some SunBinaries on the
internet - our Sun came without any compiler at all....
Thanks for preparing these. I have picked up perl, top and traceroute
(so far) and they work fine on my 2.5.1 machines.
T H A N K S ! ! !
I just thought I should drop you a quick email to say thank-you very
much to all the people who made all those Solaris ports that you have
published on your web site. The packages have been very useful to our
site.
THANK YOU SO SO SO SO SO VERRRRRY MUCH!!!!!
Yeeeeee!!!!!! Thanks a million Steve!
Thank you for your nice site. It's very useful and efficient to download
and install packages !
I am glad to know there are so many packages for Solaris on your Web
Site.
I am here to say thanks to you. It's very helpful to me!!
I've also installed samba from your excellent
collection with no problems at all!
Thanks so much for your help,, allowing me to bounce ideas of
you.
Just stumbled across your useful Solaris freeware site - keep the
effort going !
First, I'd like to extend my thanks for the Solaris Freeware project.
It has saved me a lot of time and effort that I otherwise spend tweaking
source code, editing Makefiles, compiling, installing, and so on. I
wish this had been available when I was building gcc! Purists may turn
their noses up at using a binary package rather than building from
source, but perhaps purists have more time than I do.
Thanks!
Best regards and thanks for a wonderful (timesaving)
site!
Great site you have got there!
Thank you very much for your help!!!
great, thanks!
Just a quick mail to say that your site saved me a lot of headaches.
Have recently been plunged into the world of Solaris 2.6 with an
Ultra 30 Creator. It's quite a bit different from what I'm used to and
the absence of a compiler completely threw me! Thank the Lord for
your gcc binaries.
First off, great job and thanks for saving me so much time.
Thanks for the Sun packages.
I am starting from scratch setting upt a web mirror on a Solaris 2.6 machine
and I have used gzip, perl, emacs(I think xemacs is better :) but I don't have
the time to get it now), WUftp, gcc, rcs, & top.
I have installed most of these from source & binaries and I think you have
saved me a great deal of time. I am not a sys. admin. person so getting back
to my "real" work is important to me.
Subject: RE: compile sendmail
I read your FAQ on the web. It was very interesting for me.
Thank-you for a very robust and productive site for Sun software.
Thank-you very much.
Your Solaris software sites are great! Now I don't have to use vi
anymore! Thank you!
First off I wanted to just say thanks for hosting a number of
applications and making it painfully simple to add! It's made my job as
a struggling sys-admin much, much easier.
We are a scientific group at the University of Salamanca in Spain.
Your work porting Gnu software to Solaris is invaluable for us.
I just came across your site tonight and was very impressed -
lots of good stuff and useful links.
first, I'd like to say just HOW MUCH I LOVE your binaries...
I am the proud admin of a Sun Ultra1 running 2.6.
cool ! thank you very much steve !
Just wanted to say thanks for a great web server.
Thank you so very incredibly much for your wonderfuly packaged
utilities for Solaris. The have made my life easier and left me more
time to go home to play with my one-year-old daughter, who has just
discovered how to open doors.
Thanks for your pointer to your site which was really helpful. Download,
install all over in 10 mins - WOW.
Thanks again for your assistance with a Solaris newbie. I really appreciate
you letting me bend your ear for a while. :^>
Thanks a bunch for the project and keep up the good work!
Thanks Steve.
Hi, I've found your site very useful, your hard work has made my life
easier.
Thank you for a job well done. I use a few of packages and they are
great.
Thank you very much! The non gunzipped was the problem. I knew it
had to be something simple or foolish. Thank you for your help. I
and my boss(es) appreciate it.
Hey, I like the way the new site looks!
Precompiled GNU gcc for Solaris 2.5.1

You can find a step-by-step description about the creation of
Solaris packages at:
Thank you for providing such an excellent service.
I'd just like to say the Sun Package archive that
you maintain is greatly appreciated; I'm paid to
research, not be a Sun Sys Admin.
I wanted to thank you for your help distributing Solaris freeware on the
net. I am glad that you are a central location to find source
and packages. I have been able to get older versions of source from
nce.sun.ca and be able to look around in the source for the original source
site so I can find the newest versions and/or patches.
Your Site is really cool ... As a new administrator of Solaris, I find
your site helpful in terms of the softwares I need. I really don't
have to compile them...
Thanks for keeping and updating your site. I go to your site (well,
the xmission.com mirror) each time I install a new machine.
I wanted to write to express my sincere thanks for your work in porting and
maintaining the products of the FSF for users of Solaris 2.5.
Thank you for your attention and for your so wonderful as useful
Solaris 2.6 freeware pages!
BTW! I was just visiting your site for the first time. I found a lot of
goodies which I will download... Thanks!
Keep up the good work!
I hope sun pays you a lot for your service, (Solaris packages)
Steve .. Thanks for all the fine work and product that helps us survive
in Sun Land ..
BTW, this is a good web page. Keep up the good work.
I really appreciate the time that you took to package-ize this
stuff-- we hardly use our UNIX box, and haven't taken the time to install
GCC and get it running, so your site really helps us get tools on there
when we find we need one...
An EXCELLENT site. Great work !
Excellent site, it saves me a lot of time and grief, especially being able to
pkgadd gcc2.7.2 on Solaris 2.6 x86 (which has no native C compiler).
Good Show !! Great job guys. I find this site very useful.
I think the work you and your colleagues have done is really great.
Having used a number of packages, without which our project would
not have been completed.
first I would like to thank you for the uncountable hours I saved by using
your pre-compiled packages for some standard-applications for my users. I
even adapted myself to a binary /opt concept, ehich fits into my existing
concept.
Thank you for all the work.
Not to bother you but I just wanted to thank you profusely for your site.
It's wonderful! I had pine and popper running on my new server in 10
minutes. You deserve a big box of McDonald's Cookies.
Congratulations for Solaris 2.5 Freeware for SPARC Home Page !
It's very useful for software designer and development.
I am a contractor and every time I get to a new site you gets hits from
me as I download your packages to quickly solve long standing problems.
They think I am genius.
Despite how much I appreciate the praise, I straighten them out and
explain it's this site that deserve the credit.
First of all, what a nice web site you have gathered for Solaris software! I am a new Solaris developer and it was a real find to tap into your site!!!
This is a very helpful site. My hearty thanks for the time and effort
you put in to it.
Thanks for the detailed, easy to use site and the wonderful programs. I
found the two programs(top and traceroute) that Sun seems to have
overlooked, but we use all the time. They installed easily and worked
without a hitch. Keep up the great work.
Thank you Steve for the hint, I got it working now!
Very nice site.
Your Solaris page is very useful.
first I want to thank you for the stuff located on
http://sunfreeware.com.
I am using a lot of this compiled packages which works very well.
Hi! As a novice ad-hoc system administrator at a small remote design center, I have found your Solaris 2.5 Freeware site to be wonderful. I mean WONDERFUL, and we are presently using six or seven of your applications with great success.
Just a note from the Sys Admins here to say we use the pre-packaged software
for Solaris on your
very frequently. Thank you for providing this service.
Thanks for the great site. Keep up the great work.
Your site has been a fantastic resource. One of the best spots for Sun
users on the net!
Wonderful SunFreeware.com website!
Congratulations for maintaining such an excellent site.
I just would like to thank you, for having a site like this.
I makes learning UNIX alot easier... and getting stuff even better.
Very nice webpage
Nice Job!!!!! It sure make my job easier.
I love your site.
In your site you say you would like to know how the software
you make is been used, and how it helps other projects. well,
I'm a independent software consultant in south of Brazil, and
I'm working as a project manager in a large software project to
our local telephone company. The general goal of this project
is to create a monitoring system, to detect and help to identify
any problem on the communication network.
Your shareware page is just great.
And many many thanx for the service!!!
First off, I want to thank you for doing all the work to make such a great
site. I'm sure lots of people like me really appreciate it.
Thank you very much for your efforts on this site. Having one place to
start is a wonderful idea. I have used your site for years and have been
neglectful in not saying thank you before this.
Thanks Steve, you saved the day.
Great site....
Thanks for a great site!!!
I have downloaded many packages from you site to use in my job... Having them in pkgadd format make it very simple to install and get these tools working quickly. It has saved me much effort.
Keep up the good work on the page. Great resource!
I don't know how often you get thanked, but it probably isn't enough. The
sunfreeware I get from your site each time Sun puts out a new version of Solaris
is a life (ie, job) saver. If I didn't have a working copy of gcc and top
running as soon as I was told to upgrade to the latest Solaris OS, I'd be
hurting. But, over the last two years you've had them when I needed them.
i love the site, it has saved me a *few* times.
Keep up the good work.
This url helped me a lot for downloading utils for Solaris 2.5.
I just wanted to say "Thank You" for maintaining a great site.
Consider this to be a highly complimentary email message about how the
project has helped me. :-)
I want to thank you & the others involved with the building of the 2.5 &
2.6 packages for the various software available on the smc.vnet.net sites.
Thanks for putting these programs on your page. I have downloaded and
use alot of the programs listed.
Thank you so much for your valuable information. I think it will save me a lot of frustrations.
I've downloaded a couple of the freeware apps on your site, and the
service you provide is great -- a real time saver for me to get
going in my task of porting, tuning, parallelizing, and benchmarking
customer codes.
I appreciate you having such a useful site as the Solaris 2.5 and 2.6
freeware programs. It saves me the hassle of trying to compile
things like gcc (no mean feat). Please keep the program sets coming.
Awesome site!!!!
Love your web site, I think there should be more around.
This is a good site which help out the likes of myself who always has
problems getting thing to compile and have no one to turn to for help.
Your site is awesome.
First of all, thank you for your effort in porting
so much useful programs on Solaris.
I want to thank you for providing the Solaris software packages at your
web site. Without your gcc package I would have been dead in the water
for sure!
Thank you! It worked just fine.
First of all, I appreciate what you're doing with the Sun freeware site.
Thanks!
I'm sure you get "praise" messages often, but I'd
like to add one more to the fray. I downloaded
many "essential" add-on utilities for Solaris 2.6
recently, and each and every one installed and ran
perfectly. Supporting the defacto "/usr/local"
directory as well as "/opt" is a real big plus. I
even appreciate your use of Frames on the web
site. Again, good job done, and THANK YOU!
Great site!! I find it very useful...
Subject: Thanks again
Thanks for your invaluable contributions to the Sun Solaris community by
providing the Sun Freeware pre-compiled and source utilities. The
Sunfreeware versions of gzip, top, ghostscript and ghostview have been
welcome additions to our systems.
Thank you for all your efforts to provide this freeware. I am especially
grateful that you provide gcc binaries, although I could compile gcc using
a "try and buy" compiler :-)
These freeware pages are extremely useful and I greatly appreciate all
the effort put into them.
Merci ;
i love this site!!!!!
You have done an outstanding job pulling all of this together. I've already
bookmarked your site for future reference.
First I'd like to say many thanks for providing this site
to the world. It has been very useful over the past
months!
Thanks for all the work you are doing. It is really nice to have these
packages available.
Thanks for the great site, by the way. The time and effort is
certainly appreciated.
enjoy your site
Not to fawn, but I find this site extremely useful. I am a sysadmin, having used Solaris at work and at home for the past couple years. Whenever I set up a new machine, I go straight to this site to get everything I need to be able to actually *use* the new machine.
First of all: a great site! It is an invaluable source of software for
my work.
Steve, thanks for your archive. It is a great place to find new and
updated software.
Great Site! I downloaded traceroute from the site on the Sunsolve
info doc and couldn't get it to build correctly. I then found your
site and was able to download and pkgadd it in a few minutes and
come up running!
> I've been getting a Sun Ultra (Solaris 2.6) running

I like your selection of Sun freeware on your site, especially the 2.6
section. I consult to many Sun owners who need make their system an
Internet server, and I have often found your site, which includes the real
key piece (gcc/g++), extremely useful.
Thank you so much for your service.
Many thanks again !
I was visiting the web site you advised and I could find all I am
needing.
You were really so helpful, I am very grateful.
First of all, thanks for maintaining the site. It's very useful.
P.S. Nice site!
I think your site is great. Obviously you and all you minion are Solaris
gods and should receive gifts of rare jewels and gold on a regular basis.
Thanks again for the help, and the service you provide.
Great site! I've been looking for something just like this & I don't
know why it took soooo long to find it!
Thanks for the great webpage. Been really useful.
Thank you for the great page! It has made my life a lot easier.
Many, many thanks!
just checked out your site - great stuff !! (you dont know what its like
sometimes, being at the other end of the globe) .. at least with the
internet information & knowledge is freely at hand, mainly to the hard
work of guys like you.
First, let me say that I am very appreciative of your package archive,
it has helped me build out my machines quickly and painlessly more times
than I care to count.
btw, love what you are doing.
Everything worked, no problems. Thanks
THANKS!!
ThankX!
Your site was very useful indeed - having bought a SPARCstation 2
with Solaris on it, software was a problem because there was no
compiler initially (as well as it being horribly slow).
As a new user of Solaris (previously NT/95) I was looking for some tools
etc. and your site was the first and only site I have needed so far.
best regards and warm wishes,
Thanx a lot !!
Thanks for your superb job! Now everything's going fine.
If you ever need something from Brasil, just call!
You have a great web site for Solaris fellas. Keep it up!
Thanks very much for the help and the cool site.
Great site! I use it a lot especially because i am not too familiar
with compiling on unix machines...
Thanks!
Great site! Love it. Makes life much easier to get the latest files and utilities.
How do you manage to find the time to maintain such a rich resource for sun people? It's a very impressive sight.
Great Site!
I've found your site quite useful. I've been using packages from your
site from your site for quite some time. It is really very convenient to
have ready-made packages which can
be installed on the fly.
I've been using your site for quite some time now. The precompiled
packages are a real time saver. You're providing an awesome resource to
the Internet community with your site.
Thank you very much!
Thanks!!!
Thanks for all of your good work.
That's dated, now. Since last night, the amazing
Steve Christensen has updated URL:
http://sunfreeware.com to
include 4.33 of lsof.
Recently I installed your excellent Bash 2.00 package and I love it!
At first please accept my congratulations for keeping the wonderful site
www.sunfreeware.com.
Great site! I use it a lot especially because I am not too familiar
with compiling on unix machines...
The sunfreeware site has been an
incredible blessing for me. Today I have downloaded a number of
packages: tcsh, gcc, gzip, gdb and rcs. All worked wonderfully.
Damn fine work.
I have been a fan of your web site for at least a year now. It is the
best thing that has happened to SUN.
a truly beautiful web site! thanks...
Thanks alot.
First of all, great site. Thanks a lot !!!!!!!
Your site rules!!!!!
Thought I would drop you a line and thank you for your work in Solaris
Freeware. I for
one appreciate it, and I know many others that do as well.
Steve,
Yes! It works!!
I don't know how to say many thanks,
Thanks for your kindness, you are so great!!
Thanks again!!
Good job
Many thanks Steve !
Super! Can't wait. Enjoyed your site, BTW. Impressive resume! :)
You have provided a very good service for Solaris users who need the
freeware.
Love the look of your web site.
Your site has been of great help. I like the idea of providing two
varieties of packages that gives the installer a choice of installing in
/usr/local or /opt/foo. I was wondering if you are going to make
First a word of thanks; I've been getting a lot of use out of the
Solaris freeware site. Thanks for all the work on it!
Thanks from China.
Thanks for your time, I know you are quite busy to help an old man... <:-)
Just a quick note to say how much I appreciated finding your ftp site with
package.
Actually finding a site where i can download this stuff and
install so easily is such a relief, i can save hours of work.
Many thanks! Your suggestions worked. I'll check
the flag options for gcc more carefully, and
maybe someday learn how to write in c!
I greatly appreciate your time.
Just upgraded one of my workstations and my server to Sol2.6 - thank you
for providing a fantastic resource!!! Saved me hours and hours of work.
Thanks Steve!!
Firstly congratulations on a great web site, I have found it very useful.
Thanks a lot, it works fine.
just visited your smc.vnet.net site, and i sure do think
it's a great site for budding sysads, programmers and the
like... been using it before and i still want to try out
all the other stuffs...
Just a quick note regarding your GREAT site.
The availability of tools like Unzip, GCC, etc. sure
makes my life a lot easier.
Keep up the great work! I'll be sure to spread the
word to all my associates.
I have used your page tremendously lately, and I have to admit
it's been a great help. I've recently reloaded one of my Sun Sparc10s
and have had little software support.
Thanks a lot for your work preparing the Solaris pkgs on Sunsite.
They came in especially useful here when I had to set up a couple of
Sun machines to be used at a conference.
PS the site is great.
I just wanted to say this site has been a life saver and time saver more than.
I really appreciate the efforts that you and your support have put into
creating such a useful repository Solaris programs. Thanks. Thanks. Thanks.
First of all, let me say how much I appreciate your effort in
compiling freeware for the Solaris platforms.
First let me thank you for an excellent service, providing us less
experienced administrators a quick and easy way to quiet users who want
things done yesterday.
Thanks again for all the great utilities!!
Let me begin with a THANK YOU for providing so many prebuild
packages as they had save me a great deal of time being able
to use these utilities immediately.
excellent job you guys are doing with this. Do you accept contributed
packages as part of the project? I'm setting up a new machine from
scratch and trying to use packages to bundle all the bits I install
from GNU et al.
I just discovered the Solaris Freeware site and think it is wonderful
and a huge service to Solaris owners who usually get the shaft when
it comes to software availability. Excellent work!
I installed gcc 2.8.1 on U2/Sol2.6. The install went well (not that it
was meant to be complicated - for that I thank you).
Steve!!! You're my HERO!!! Thanks. it worked!!!!
I can go home now!!!!
You certainly gonna get a place in the big cyber-heaven up there with
this site!
This is my first stop if I look for freeware for the Sun's here at the
office. Keep up the excellent work and keep those goodies coming.
I am new sysadmin. Your site is very helpful for me to maintain our
system.
That worked great. By the way. I have found your site veryyyyy useful.
Thank you for all of your hard work. If you ever need someone to test please
feel free to get in contact with me.
I thank you for your time and dedication!
The new site is wonderfull!
I'm looking for expect-5.25 and I found it here. Super!
I'd just like to say thanks for all the effort you have put into
your site and packages.
I love the site. I have found a number of packages to be very useful at
work on SPARC machines, and at home on my Intel box.
Greatly appreciate your SunFreeware site efforts. The page
design is very VERY effective.
You've a great site!
Nice job on the site -- makes life a lot
easier.
Just to say great site.
Keep up the good works.
Keep up the good work!
Thank you very much!!!!
I am a manager at PricewaterhouseCoopers
(formerly Price Waterhouse before our
merger with Coopers & Lybrand). One of the
most helpful resources in getting our
attack and penetration laboratory up to
speed in our New England office was the
http://www.sunfreeware.com/ site.
I just found that Freeware Site on the net. A great thing!
Thanks Steve, that was the problem.
I solved my problem - thanks to your advice. Have a nice day.
Thanks,
And a fine site it is, too! You have done an outstanding job
with that site, and you are performing an invaluable service
for Sun sysadms everywhere! Thank you!
Subject: remerciements
Merci Sir (:-) Christensen.
a french fan.
Your suggestion "-D_FILE_OFFSET_BITS=64 -D_LARGEFILE_SOURCE" worked.
Thanks
Many thanks for the great job you do in maintaining such a site for
SPARC/Solaris users.
I've looked and looked through the Sun site in the past and never seen this software collection. This time I stumbled upon it by accident (through www.hotrod.com). YEAH!!!
> Start at http://sunfreeware.com/pkgadd.html and the links therein.
This site has saved me countless hours of pain and torment. Before I found
out about it, I had spent days trying to figure out how to configure some of
my machines, esp. those with nothing on them and no access to a tape drive, etc.
Kudos:
This site has helped me tremendously. It is great to have one site to check
for all the utilities I need. Having all the software in packages, and for
2.5 and 2.6, makes it incredibly easy to rollout the newest version of
About your 2.6 packages I prefer them
because you use the /usr/local directory
By using this directory it's far easier
to make a network installation
(ie: use NFS to share /usr/local between machines)
because it's more difficult to do that with /opt
This is really a very very useful site.
hee! the new site looks great. and frames that actually /work/!
woo! thanks for all the hard work.
I found your site very useful.
Looks like a very nice site! I'm glad it's there and I think that
it will be a very useful site to a lot of people.
Steve, I love the site.
Thanks for your page of precompiled binaries for Solaris 2.5 and 2.6
systems. This solves a lot of our problems to find suitable compiling
environment for those platforms (we currently have compiling environment
only for 2.6, but on some projects have 2.5 platform...)
I'd like to express my satisfaction with the web site and the software
you have made available there.
Subject: Re: Creating packages?
Can someone please point me to some docs on creating "packages"?
Awesome! Just what I needed. Thanks, I don't do much Solaris stuff, so I
had no idea where to look.
Thanks for your help, Steve. We got it working. I smacked my forehead and
exclaimed "D'oh!" when you said the answer was in your FAQ. Sorry about
that.
The job you have undertaken is a large one and changes constantly. Keep up
the work.
Go to:
Pass along a sincere "Thanks for making this possible!" to..... whoever
pushed for, and also made the software available to the masses.
THANKS for putting Gimp on your site!
Your notes on how to run pkgadd were great. The man page for pkgadd is a little misleading.
Fantastic site!
This site is great!
I just installed 2.6 on a SparcStation 20, then Apache 1.3.1 (as a
pre-compiled binary from Steve Christensen's fabulous site,
http://smc.vnet.com/Solaris_2.6.html - well worth checking out for all
the other packages - as in pkgadd format!), and it's running fine...
Your material on creating pkgadd software Packages under Solaris 2.5 is
EXCELLENT. The instructions are very crisp and easy to follow.
I have been able to create and install packages, following the instructions,
without any trouble! Thanks once again.
You've done a fantastic job!
Thanks very much for your tremendously important site of
binary packages for Solaris!!!
I'd like to first thank you for keeping up a site that I use quite often,
it makes it much easier for Sys Admins like to to find software, so if
noone else has said it, Thanks!
You were right. Everything is working wonderfully now. Thanks for your help.
Thanks for a great site.
The pkgadd info was timely as I had a customer
asking that question.
Ummm, I put in gcc 281 yesterday using the /opt install from the Solaris
Freeware site at http://smc.vnet.net/Solaris_2.6.html
Hi, just read about SUN's push for participants in Solaris software
development and testing program in the 17 August issue of Internet Week. I
checked out the Sunfreeware.com site and wow, I didn't know all that
existed.
The sunfreeware.com site made it practical for me to use Solaris
here without looking bad because I needed to spend a ton
of time compiling stuff from sources. (Not to mention the pain
of bootstrapping a gcc).
Thanks a lot for supplying the premade software. I'd have
been up a creek without you since I have no other compiler on
my new box. Now that I know you're there, I'll definitely be
back!
I'm a telecommuter and was given a Sparc with practically no
software, not even gzip or gcc. I found your site today and
can't believe my good luck!! Many, many thanks,
I am a big fan on your sunfreeware site.
It's a small world. I hit your free software site regularly, and point
all of the people I introduce to Solaris to your page.
Hey, I was just checking out that Freeware for Solaris site... and, wow,
it got me really excited. ;)
First of all your page is really great. I'm not the hacker and
would have a hard time compiling all the stuff myself.
Thanks a lot
Thank You Very Much
Hello Steve! I love your Solaris Freeware site. Wonderful!!
Got it! Thanks.
Thank you very much.
Thanks for the site -- it's great.
Many thanks again. (Tail between my legs) :}
First of all GREAT site ..
This site is very good and very useful for me. Keep the good spirit and
keep upto date.
I think you Solaris freeware page is wonderful.
Thanks to people like you, people like us can have all the tools we
need, FREE.
Excellent, wonderful and very useful web site......Good job.
Thank you for your homepages.
First of all, I really appreciate the work you have been doing with
GNU, especially the gcc and emacs packages. Using the FAQs, I finally
got a C compiler that finds all the libraries and includes. Our C
expert" had to stop whining that "the compiler doesn't work, it
sucks".
first, thanks for the great site! I'm a consultant and,
as such, find myself floating around more often than
most between workstations. Whenever I have to begin
work on a new machine, I first go to sunfreeware.com
to get the 'essentials'. Who has time to rebuild
everything from scratch nowadays?
I appreciate your help.
Thank you very much for your help!!
You can download top utility from http://sunfreeware.com/. It'a a good
one.....
Thanks for
the efforts ... it makes my life much easier!
Thank you very much for putting me on this route.
Having just directed another budding new sysadmin to your Sunfreeware
site,
The site is in fact an incredible resource!
I now begin almost all responses to "i can't seem to compile X"
emails with "checkout out smc.vnet.net"
Just a word to say that your Sun project is very helpful for
me.
This is a great site by the way. If there someone at Sun I can send
feedback to about
how useful these packages are, let me know.
Just wanted to say the Sun Freeware site is super!! I look to it first
when one of our engineers asks for a new bit ot software.
Thanks Steve. I appreciate the info.
Thanks, it works.
thanks..
Once again, thank you for all the good work and continued success.
I have quietly thanked whomever (God, Buddha, etc. - your pick) for your
WONDERFUL web site every time I have accessed it over the last 2-3 years
(extremely frequently). It is the most invaluable source of software
when installing a new sun workstation I have ever come across and makes
what used to be a long and laborious task almost fun.
I have really enjoyed having your Sun Freeware site available during my
constant building and breaking of Sun systems.
Thanks very much for your help. You have saved
me some valuable time.
Thanks for your reply. This helps alot.
Steve you've got a great thing going here. The packaging is the topping on
the cake because with that, admins feel comfortable putting software in,
because they know they can get it out as well. Please continue the efforts.
Thanks for the help. It turned out after looking at what installed on my
new system I didn't have the SUNWhea files. It never occurred to me that
it wasn't part of the standard install. After I installed that all the
compilers have been running perfectly.
Thanks for this site. It is setup in a nice fashion to find everything I need.
Thanks a bundle.
I found the programs, and I installed on our system. They work fine. Thanks for
your help.
BTW. LOVE the site! It's my first stop for Solaris software.
Thanks for your help.
Since I have my new job (technical sales for sun projects in my company),
I've been contacting the sunfreeware site on a regular basis. I want to
start by thanking you for the time and efforts you spend maintaining it,
it's one of the most useful sites I have ever seen.
Thanks for the great web site!!
Thanks so much for having this site. I just got a little Ultra 5 for
home and needed some good tools. Trying to build the GNU stuff yourself
is difficult. I know here at the lab we have a guy who builds these
things full time. So thanks for making it so easy.
Thanks very much for your kind notice. I can find the file of unzipped
format.
Thanks again !!
Firstly, congratulations on the excellent sunfreeware.com site, I wish this
was around about
five years ago!
Thank you very much for your help.
Have you checked out the pre-compiled packages for Solaris (SPARC and
x86) at http://www.sunfreeware.com ? They also have pre-compiled
packages of gcc (both platforms). Unless you need some special settings
for Perl this will work fine. I have installed both on 30 servers
(SPARC and x86) and have not had one complaint from Software Engineers
yet.
I think your site is wonderful.
By the way, this site is a very good idea.
Have you tried to download the 2.5.1 packages from sunfreeware.com? They are
much easier to install and are more recent versions - all pre-compiled. Once
installed and the correct paths set up, it works like a charm. Then you can
compile all the other GNU software.
Thanks for the site (and the GIMP)! Very useful.
I've downloaded a lot of precompiled stuff from your site, and
am very thankful!
Thanks for your efforts in making a one stop shop for valuable Solaris
tools. It has been extremely helpful.
Thanks. I really appreciate this.
Thank you for your response!
They must have had your site in mind when they coined the term "added
value". Thanks to you, it's now possible to set up a free development
environment in a matter of an hour or two, and that includes the download
time on a slow modem. It's services like this that make users flock to an
operating system. I don't know what your deal is with Sun, but they should
finance 100% of your site and throw in a bonus.
I have to say that your instruction
over the web about how to creating a Software Package under Solaris 2.5
are VERY useful and simple for a novice like me. As a result, I were
able to create a package myself. I felt great having read your page.
Thanks for putting together an extremely useful and
well presented site.
http://www.sunfreeware.com is a GREAT resource! It allowed me for the
most part to combine the best of the Solaris world and the best of the
GNU/Linux/Open Source world. I LOVE my Sun now!
First of all let me tell you that your site is very well done.
I just found your web site after reading about it on the CNN computing
pages. It seems to be really a huge repository for everything SOLARIS!!
Thanks for a great site.
These packages are a _big_ help.
Great Site!
Have always thought your site was great.
The sunfreeware site is great! I have been visiting so many times.
Steve, thank you for your great "Freeware for Solaris" site.
Thanks a lot for your very useful site. Ciao
I just visited sunfreeware.com and downloaded some tools.
Most useful site this year!
Keep up the great work! We really appreciate your efforts.
Thanks for a great resource to use and to point people to.
You guys are doing a great great job. I really appreciate what you are
doing.
I would like to offer my thanks for providing your
freeware site, I have installed GCC and libraries and am very happy with
the result. Thanks, and keep up the good work.
I am a contractor working in London who for the nth time has been given the task of setting up a Sun box. As always there is no compiler license ("you mean it comes without a compiler?"), no useful utilities like top and a bunch of perl programmers who are waiting to use the machine.
I have used your freeware site with great happiness and joy. It makes it
soo much easier to set up a small Sparc system.
I'd also like to say how appreciative we are of your efforts. we are a
small company and the cost of commercial software now is very high.
because of what you are doing, we can put our sun box to better use.
It has helped me a great deal, thank you very much for maintaining such a
site.
You've saved the day again. :) thank you very much.
Subject: Super-duper web site...
For a biologist doubling as a Solaris workstation sys admin, your
packages are a godsend! Thanks.
It's a big help for me and my SUN with your
already compiled files at sunfreeware.com.
I work at Sun in the field as an SE and find this site
*indispensable* for finding all Solaris binaries/freeware
that are impossible to carry with me.
I did get all of the packages to install properly, including the original
download. Thanks for your courteous and prompt replys. When our paths
cross, I'll buy you a beer, or if you need the kind of Internet access
which we provide I'll waive your signup fees.
Thank you for responding so quickly. Sorry about the confusion with
Solaris7. Please keep up the great work with Solaris. I am a system
administrator who relies heavily on your great services.
WOW.... I am IMPRESSED with the fast reply.... THANKS :))))
Thank you for responding so quickly. Sorry about the confusion with
Solaris7. Please keep up the great work with Solaris. I am a system
administrator who relies heavily on your great services.
I think you run a great site and I will be using it a lot in the coming
months.
This is a terrific service!
I like the work you do.
I have used many packages from your exceedingly useful site,
Thanks for the Freeware for
Solaris site, it is great for people like me who wish to use software
rather than spend time working out how to compile it!
Firstly I'd like to congratulate for very useful homepage for Solaris Freeware.
Hey folks, you are really quick as I can see. Now I have no excuses
for *not* moving to 2.7.
Thank you so much for running this site. It has worked very well, and saved
me lots of time!
IT WORKS !!! THANKS !!! If you come by any chance to Silicon Valley,
please give me a call... I owe you at least a lunch :)))
Thanks for putting the site together. Plenty of useful tools.
Subject: RE: great web site
Many thanks indeed for the prompt reply.
Your sunfreeware.com site is pretty impressive ! Congratulations on work
well done !!!
Thanks for your help and your great site!
First, I'd like to thank you for all your efforts making these packages
available. Your main page URL is a button on my browser toolbar.
Consider this a highly complimentary email, an indication of how
much the Freeware for Solaris project has helped me. In return,
Thanks for the advice.
Thank you so much for your information.
Thanks for the great work in doing the binaries!
Thanks a lot for your advise!
First of all, great site. Especially since I've gotten Solaris 2.6, and
now 7 through the special promotion.
Just a quick email to say thanks for running the Sunfreeware site. We
have upgraded the core services of a 30,000 user ISP from Linux to 9 Sun
boxes in 4 weeks. We could not have achieved this timescale without
your site.
If I ask you directly like that is after seeing your
incredibly nice and extremely useful website
on Solaris and SPARC.
Thanks again for the great site it has most helpful.
Great site - very useful resource.
Your site has been a blessing. Being a beginning UNIX administrator.
It's great to find many of the STUFF needed in a PACKAGE ready to
install.
Yet another great job by you and the folks at SUN.
I have just discovered your site. Thank you for saving a lot of
redundant work.
First of all, great site. You've got a lot of good stuff there.
Thanks for the help, after re-reading the page for the 37th time, it
finally clicked on what I was doing wrong. Keep up the good work with
the site.
Brilliant Site!
New to Solaris, got Sol7 promotion from sun. Was dismayed at the fact that
there was no 'real' development tools such as cc so got the GCC pack from
you. Now have a full development system after much pain in the arse with
compiling make and binutils, so I'm gonna make some packages now and stick
em on a CD for future use!
Thanks a lot for maintaining the extremely useful www.sunfreeware.com sit=
e! It
has saved me weeks of work over the years and enabled me to do my job bet=
ter and
more productively.
Very useful site; thanks.
Thanks very much for your patience and persistence.
Just wanted to thank you for the amazing job that you are doing. Every
time someone ask me about software for Solaris, I just point them to
your site.
Thank you for the excellent sunfreeware.com site. It has been
very helpful both at work and at home. It's always THE first
site to look at for a software, especially after a fresh
Solaris installation; and of course also afterwards to get
software upgrades.
First of all I would like to say that this site is one of the most useful sites I've ever seen.
Many thanks for your site which is really helping me as a novice
applications administrator!
My Sun reseller pointed me to your page this morning to obtain
Perl. I am more than a little excited to see that pre-built Perl is
available. Thanks very much for making it available.
Thank you very much for your time and your site! It has proved to be a
truly invaluable resource many times over.
Love the site - keep up the
good work.
I've downloaded a number of GNU packages from the sunfreeware.com site
and they have been nothing but wonderful! Emacs is great, and of course
gcc...
It worked!! I can't tell you how grateful I am for your help. I don't
know what was wrong with my browser. Thanks so very much for
helping me through that issue. The file sizes were exactly as you
said. (Of course.)
Thanks.
Many thanks Steve.
Just by chance I come to your page. No doubt it's one of the
best web pages serving this world nowadays.
Your site is a fabulous one.
Steve...How I love it that you have taken it on to create
packages for Solaris!
I really like your effort to provide binaries for Solaris. I am new
to Solaris UNIX and am having a hard time getting enough software to get
going. Your page has helped immensely.
Your site is a life saver.
You are a good man!!!!
Thanks Steve !!!!
Your SunFreeware site is indeed very helpful to a beginner like me. More
power to you and your site.
I have visited this site a few times and picked up a few very useful
programs.
First of all, thanks for a wonderful site and a job well done!
I just got my copy of Free Solaris 7 for Intel and I kinda like it.
Your site is the best on the web. I am new to Solaris and I want to
thank you for the time you have saved me and I hope to one day return
the favors to you.
Thanx. Where do you get time for all of it? :-)
I went to www.sunfreeware.com & i really loved the site.
What you do is a lifesaver! Thanks for the work you've done and the
work you will do!
I just wanted to send a big THANK YOU! for the web site www.sunfreeware.com. Because I compile all my tools from source, ever since Sun stopped shipping any sort of compiler with their OS it has been a big hassle bootstrapping a new system. Your site is making that a lot easier now.
Many many (innumerable) thanks for providing the Solaris Freeware site.
Thanks much for putting together the website and providing
the precompiled packages. They saved me a lot of work--especially
gcc. It's tough to bootstrap gcc when your Sun came without even
a minimal cc. And without a C compiler...
Thanks for a quick answer >:)
You have a great site. It saved me a lot of time and work.
Thanks. Now It works very well.
Thanx a lot!!I installed the binary & it works just great!!!!
I wanted to thank you for all the work you
have done with the sunfreeware.com site. It is
very useful for me as I am trying to learn
about UNIX.
Yes,it works just fantastic!!!
I would like to take a moment to congratulate you on your work on
packaging Sun software for the Solaris community. I have been working on
Solaris for several years now and have not seen any site comparable to
yours. In fact, I have downloaded and used several packages from your site
over the years and now am involved in a similar project involving
enterprise software packaging for the entire Solaris installed base. Maybe
I might turn to you for some pointers/gotchas for this !! Once again - you
have done a great job on the Sun Freeware site and I hope it continues to
flourish ......
Wow, excellent suggestion! I did install libstdc++-2.8.1.1 but I didn't
have /usr/local/lib in my LD_LIBRARY_PATH. I am terribly sorry to have
bothered you with this problem, thanks for your incredibly quick help. If
there is anyway I can help you in the future please let me know.
I just wanted to congratulate you on your SunFreeware.com site.
It has helped us out here (saved lots of time and hair pulling).
Thanks for soliciting input! Really appreciate your work to
package these things - really a big leverage on installation!
You seem to be a busy person!!!
Thanks all for the good works on packaging for the
Solaris 2.5, 2.6.
GREAT WEB PAGE!!!
Hi Steve, Thank you very much for your great work. I am very impressed by things you have done and hope you continue to do so.
Like the web site - cool stuff Dude.
I'm fairly new to the UNIX World and your site has made my introduction to
UNIX a very easy one.
Thanks a lot for your work and attention. The SUN freeware
site is a goldmine I use often.
Thanks for a wonderful site! :-)
I just found your sunfreeware.com site a few days ago, and I totally
dig it!
Thank you for your really helpful work. This makes our lives quite easier !!!
Sunfreeware.com is a GREAT service. We have a split between Irix and Solaris
boxes that we manage and through your site, the Solaris boxes are up in a few
minutes with our needed software. Thanks, much!
Just got my 5th or 6th tool for Solaris x86 2.6 off your site. Thank you.
Thanks for the great project - its helped in untold hundreds of situations.
Thanks again, I really appreciate all the help.
This site is excellent. I am now saving considerable time when I
upgrade my systems by not having to spend all my cycles re-compiling my
favorite stuff. This reduced the time for me to upgrade to Solaris 7
to less than 2 hours. I especially appreciate not having to recompile
gcc, perl and other big packages. This allows me to move immediately
forward on to new learning and compiling adventures. This is
especially important to me now that I am involved in more managerial
roles and have less tech time to myself.
Great site, Steve!! Thanks for the help & a great site.
Thanks for making all these packages available. You have saved me from a lot of aggravation.
Your site really kicks ass -
keep up the great work!
Thanks for a great service, this site will save many man hours a) in PD
Software compilations, b) consolidating key PD Software in one place for
Solaris 7, in a most timely manner! congratulations...
Thanks so much for a speedy response!
I wanted to say thanks for maintaining your Solaris resources. It's
helped make these beasts into usable machines. In the olden days
ftp.uoregon.edu was a great place, but they no longer exist. It took a
few cluesticks against my head from friends to find your place, and I'm
glad I did.
That did the trick... thanks!
Thank you and your team for the time and effort put towards Solaris Freeware
Project.
Thank you for the time you spend on the Solaris Freeware Project. In case no one
has told you lately, the project helps a lot of people.
Successful Steve !
Thanks for your hard work in getting these packages ported and put in pkgadd
format. You have been a great assist to me in getting a new Intel/Solaris 7
development platform put together.
GNU is great but you are better. Every thing in this world should
be HTML based like your site. Easy to Search and download.
I'd like to mention how much I appreciate your site! A most useful
resource.
Thanks for a great site !!!!
I love your site.
Thanks for your great work.
Your site has been very helpful to me for setting up development environment
on Solaris systems with all the "goodies" that you have ready-to-download.
Thanks for the cool site. Your work has made my life much
simpler.
Thanks again for your cool site and all the work you put in preparing
the packages.
This is a very useful site, congratulations.
Love the site. :) I've been using it to get some of those pesky bins who
use imake instead of configure, and want Sun's development system.
I am a student from Taiwan. This web site is very useful for me.
I got c compiler, and other freewares from this site.
Thanks for having a nice site.
Thank you very much for your
effort in maintaining such a beautiful and
useful site as www.sunfreeware.com.
Thanks a bunch for all the hard work you put in on this site. I can't
tell you how many hours of work it has saved me and my clients. I (and a lot of other people) are sincerely in your debt!
Your site is great....thanks
for all the other programs.
Let me say, that I think you're doing a great job for many of
us, especially those of us that are kinda new to Solaris.
I recently got into your site and have downloaded some of your work.
They are really good.
My customer has down-loaded the sendmail-8.9.1 for SPARC/Solaris-2.6 package from your
wonderful site, and got it up and running with next to no further
help from me (uncommenting a single line in sendmail.cf, viz. the
Fw command so that sendmail.cw will be consulted, seems to be all
the customization needed)!
I have been using some of your packages (especially gcc) since Solaris
2.5.1 and then, with each Sun Solaris update, I have always found the
new packages on your site.
Keep on doing such a fine job !
Thanks - great site - use it all the time! Keep up the great work!!!!
Oh! and about time, your site is great! It helped me alot since I
haven't deal w/ solaris before. Congratulations!
THANKS a million!
Thank you for the great job you are doing.
Thanks for providing this great resource - I use a SPARC 10 at
home, and sunfreeware.com is the first place I go when I need software.
It's so much nicer to have a pkg that I can remove later than something
I dump into /usr/local/.
Thank you very much sir! Thanks for your efforts for the Sun community!
Thanks for getting this web site going. It has been a GREAT help,
especially with g++.
First off - well done on the work done so far to all involved.
Excellent site.
Keep up the good work!
I am impressed!
Thank you very much for your prompt response. Really appreciate it.
I just wanted to add my note of thanks for your work in putting together
the Sunfreeware site. It's one of the most useful and time saving sites
on the net. Your efforts are truly appreciated.
I want to thank you for all the packages you do : it save me a lots
of time...:)
Hello God of solaris packages,
I use and enjoy your site. Thank you!
Comments on your sunfreeware site: It's great!
It means that I can now write scripts for some of my customers in Perl
since I can now just load perl as a package. This is BRILLIANT.
First off, I would like to say that www.sunfreeware.com has been an
indispensable resource for me. I have a Solaris 7 Intel box at home that I
tinker with as a hobby, and I can't afford the $X000 that Sun charges for
their software. Through your site, I have been able to make my home box a
functional usable, machine, as opposed to simply a novelty. Many thanks go
out to you and your helpers!
I have downloaded the apache web server and it runs great!
Your site is now permanent in my bookmarks.
I just wanted to say thanks for all the free stuff. As a
student, I need all the free stuff I can get. I think
sometimes people begin to think that companies such as yours
should do this any way, or if you want my business your
going to give me free stuff. Then when they get it their
not appreciative of it.
Great job on the PkgCreation Cookbook for Solaris, it worked like a champ
the first time I ran it.
First off: great work, I came across your site over 2 years ago and it still
rocks.
This is a very good site, and thanks from us !
On how to increase swap space:
Fantastic site!
Hey Steve,
Thanks for the tip, i hadn't gotten to that part of the FAQ.
It worked.
I really like this site,
I think it's about the best one I have come across for precompiled solaris
stuff, that is easy to find.
and your documentation of common errors is really good.
Thank you,
Thanks Steve, You help me a lot.
I would like to thank you for the wonderful service that you provide
to the Solaris community.
I have found your packaged software really useful.
thanks for taking the time to help me, i am looking forward to running sendmail and a webserver off this old work horse and being a novice coming off of 98 it's a bit bumpy at times, but thanks to nice people like you, its possible.
Thanks muchly :-)
thank you very, very, very much. You've put together a great collection and
you've saved me a tremendous amount of time.
First let me thank you for providing these installation packages, this
really helps in maintaining our small group of workstation with
up-to-date software. Our main activity is more on the developing side
than on the sysadmin.
I just wanted to thank you for the Sun freeware
site. I use it to quickly get a server up and
running with the utilities we need. One thing
that really counts is when you're getting open
source, you first need a compiler to compile the
stuff. Your site allows us to get gcc/g++ and
get a start on things without purchasing a
compiler.
I am working on packaging software and I found your article "Creating
pkgadd Software Packages under Solaris" on the Internet extremely
helpful.
i just wanted to take a moment and tell you what a great relief it is to
know that your site with all that solaris freeware is out there.
Thank you so much for maintaining this site. I was going insane until I
found and figured out how to use it. Why? Because I recently acquired
the free Solaris but wasn't able to do everything I wanted because it
doesn't include (as you already know I'm sure) key utilities like gzip,
make, or a compiler I did find
gzip at other sites, but only the source code; and the compiled gnu
compiler is also available but only in gzip format. Thanks to your
site, I'm out of this situation.
I got your address from your excellent website, freeware for
solaris. I have successfully downloaded and installed a few of the gnu
tools. Thanks very much.
Thanks for the sunfreeware.com web site, it 's very useful.
Hi Steve, love the web site. You make my job very easy providing all of
these packages, I just want to thank you for that.
I just wanted to drop a quick note to say thank you for your work on the
Freeware for Solaris site. I just installed Solaris7 x86 at home, being
ever-so-tired of NT, and was delighted at how successful I have been with it
(except for my sound card and the display quality). The freeware has
installed perfectly and I am even fully operational with GCC and my
development environment. Your site is a God-send. Thanks for the outstanding
contribution to the 'net.
First of all I must congratulate you on some excellent pages -
sunfreeware.com is a great resource for us with Solaris for Intel as most
precompiled Solaris software seems to be compiled for Sparc platforms.
Keep up the good work!
Thanks you for your effort with sunfreeware.com, it is making our lives
so much simpler.
Thanks for maintaining such a useful site for sun users.
"Wow! what a site! how could I live before downloading tons of stuff
there? It saved my miserable Unix systems engineer life !"
Thank you for maintaining such a great site. It has saved me a lot of
time and effort specially the pre complied binaries.
Excellent site! Many thanks.
My name is Mark and I'm a Network Administrator. I just wanted you to
know I appreciate all the hard effort you have put into
sunfreeware.com. I have not been using Unix that long but I love
Solaris. It is by far my favorite OS. It's clean, stable, and puts MS
to shame. I have been a MS person for many years but now realize the
power that Unix has which is lacking in MS. But most of all, it's
sites like yours that keep me going. If I didn't have the opportunity
to download freeware and keep playing with Solaris everyday then I
would lose interest.. I obviously can't afford to buy every app Sun
makes (although they are great).. No matter what, Unix will always be
the best OS for the Web, FTP, e-mail, and other various types of
servers..
Fabulous ...
First of all, I would like to congrat you guys on this great web site.
Thank you for creating packages that are easy-to-install and all the
other work you've done. You are a great help!
I want to compliment you on a really cool and useful web
site. Keep up the good work :D
Thank you for your solaris site, this helped me get sunboxes usable very quickly.
First thanks for you site, since i am not a programmer i can save a lot
of time. before trying to compile something i can go to your site and
look if what i need is already here.
yes, that was the solution,
I just wanted to say thanks.
thank you for the effort of bringing all those freeware to everyone
running Solaris.
Thanks for all your work on this site, it really saves me
so much time.
I want to say that that your site is the most important professional
resource I can even think of. I work in an acadcemic environment under
a limited budget. I find myself frequently asked to make mongrel
workstations happy compiling software and running apps like latex and
xfig.
you run a great site!!!
Thanks for maintaining www.sunfreeware.com.
I use it all the time to obtain sources for my project.
Great job on the site! You are a life saver!
You've got an excellent resource started at http://www.sunfreeware.com !
I have found your site EXCELLENT!
Thanks for making all the software I need readily available in one place.
Your site is out of this
world...i probably visit it 99 times a day at least. thanks so much.
Great job on the Freeware site!! I hope Sun is taking care of you
for your efforts!
Your site sunfreeware.com is excellent! I've been visiting it since a
long time now. It's good to see that you have compiled software for
Solaris 7 and for Intel platform too.
First off, many thanks for your efforts on sunfreeware.com - it's invaluable!
This site saves vast quantities of re-configuring/compile GNU software -
you deserve a medal (or vast sums money).
Thank you very much for your work !
I have two Sun Sparc 5.
I didn't get the Sun installation disk an its programs. So I am
very happy to found here what I use on my linux pc and works too on the
Sparc.
thanks for that - this site is pretty well just what I need!
Thanks much ... its working
I just wanted to say you've got a great site - Its helped a ton
getting the compiler running on my system.
Thanks a lot.
The Solaris Freeware site is the best I have seen. Everywhere else has been confusing, with lots of files, but very little explanation. Thanks!!
BTW, thanks for doing this. It has helped me out and saved a lot of time
on customer sites where it isn't always reasonable to download and compile
for various reasons.
I just visited your website at sunfreeware.com :-)
Cool site, lots of Solaris programs, and useful info's.
Awesome site !
I think you're doing a great service to the sun community by building these
freeware packages and putting them at the sunfreeware.com site.
Congratulation for your great site Solaris Freeware.
Its just great.
First of all, I think you are doing a great job!!
First, I'd like to say that this site is awesome. I use it all the
time. I't's much easier and faster to get the precompiled stuff.
Thanks for providing your site for Solaris users.
First of all, congrats on the progress of the site....I didn't even
realize where I was when I clicked on a hyperlink in a newsgroup
article......very nice new look....and a lot more packages too. Nice
job!
Thank you for maintaining such a site especially for newbies like me.
I saw your web and it was really cool - thanks for the info.
I was able without great problems to port my client-server database system to Solaris 7, using Your great port of gcc. In fact code for server compiled without errors ( I mean the version for RedHat Linux, it is stunning how similar these both systems are).
In response to your "how you can help" page on sunfreeware.com,
I'd like to sincerely thank you for providing the pre-compiled packages
on-line.
Your Solaris 7 version of the GNU gcc 2.8.1 compiler was a
lifesaver! Thanks!
I love your sunfreeware-site.
I have been using SunOS/Solaris since 1990, both as a student and at work.
I became a software consultant after new years and at my current commission they
use Windoze, so I missed my dear Solaris :)
So I then decided to install Solaris 7 on my PC at home, and that when I got in
touch with your site.
I'd like to say thanks for all the work on the sunfreeware.com
site. It's been an invaluable resource.
First of all I would like to congratulate you for the wonderful job that your doing.
I find your site quite cool.
Thanks for putting up this site and continuing to distribute free
software for Solaris. Because of you and this site, I no longer spend
countless frustrating hours trying to build software I downloaded from
the net. Instead, I come here, download ready-to-go software, run pkgadd
and in minutes I have an application or tool I can use immediately. You
provide a very important service to me.
I am very impressed with your web site. You have obviously
put a great deal of effort into it.
Love your site.
Love you!
Let me first say that I think the sun freeware site is awesome. I love it.
try http://www.sunfreeware.com, it's a great site.
First off, great site.
This project has helped me learn to build a network used for
prototyping embedded C++ modules for an embedded storage product
we're working on.
Thank you for an outstanding site which has helped me tremendously. I
particularly appreciate the great level of help you provide to those of
us who are beginner to intermediate level system administrators. For
example the help you provided regarding the size problems with the /usr,
/opt, /var, /tmp directories has helped me tremendously. I now custom
configure these partitions to be larger when I build a machine but for
the systems I inherited with these size constraints your help saved me a
lot of time. Thanks again for a really outstanding site.
Thanks for a great site. It really has helped me tremendously!
Thanx for your help!
I'll like to congratulate you on your brilliant work with the sunfreeware
website.
Thank you very much for the generous amounts of time and effort you have
put into this site!!
Thanks for the info. It's just what I was looking for.
I just want to thank You for this site (sunfreeware.com) ...
This Site is a big help for me to administrate my SUN Computers,
and keep the cost small :-)
Thanks for responding so quickly. It works!
Thank You very much for your quick replies. I will try out.
I would to thank you for your work to date. Most excellent!
get gcc from
http://www.sunfreeware.com/
the site rocks.
I like to take time out and thank people when I can, so here goes:
Thanks for the quick reply!
Cool -- thanks Steve
Thanks for the help steve. Appreciated. :)
a big, big *thank you* in the very first place.
worked perfectly. thanks for the help.
Kudos on an excellent site!
I've just found your Freeware-pages for Solaris... nice thing! :-)
( big fan of the site )
Thanks for the help....
I got it. It's so simple and I would like to thank you very much for your
effort! Yeh!
Thanks a lot!
Great site!
Thanks a lot !
Thanks for the great site! You saved me a LOT of headaches by
making the latest gcc (and libstdc++) available for Solaris 7!
Just wanted to tell you how useful your site has been to me. I'm not (wasn't) much of a unix guru, more networking and Internet security side of the world. I needed to installed Gated on my sun but had none of the tools/packages preinstalled. Your site saved me hours/possibly days of work. (Ultimately I downloaded perl, sendmail, gcc, make,db,bison, traceoute)
Thanks for a great page.
Steve, after installing Solaris 7 Intel I realized I needed a compiler.
Stayed up all night trying to compile GCC under Linux for Solaris.
Fell flat on my face. By luck I found the SUN Freeware site. Can't
tell you how happy I was. If others know of this & Solaris developers
offer, Solaris Intel would wipe out Linux. Great job, thanks for the help.
This site should be in the Solaris & Media package.
Thanks,
First, thanks for the excellent site that you host for Sun Freeware. I
consider it
an invaluable tool (really).
First, let me say how helpful the pre-packaged Solaris freeware site
has been to me. I have downloaded a significant portion of the
packages available on your site and have integrated them into a
customized autoinstall environment that would probably not be nearly so
elegant without this software already existing in a Solaris package
format. I started at a new company with very few Solaris machines and
was able to create a robust infrastructure containing a rich set of
software within a month or two due in large part so your work. Thank
you.
Thanks for all of your efforts to maintain this site.
The site is great! Thanks for the help. It saved me a bunch of time.
First of all I wanna thank you for a really good and useful site!
Thanks for maintaining this useful site.
I've downloaded some of your packages at sunfreeware and they have been
very helpful.
Let me thank you for all the work you have done. I appreciate it greatly.
I found your site www.sunfreeware.com to be a major administration resource for us. The packaging is a breeze to install and keep many machines current.
Thank you very much for your kind effort.
Great Web site !!! I found that it is very convenient because the software has been precompiled and very well arranged and documented.
You site is the BEST!!. You'd think they'd have done this for every OS.
Thank you for providing all these packages!
YOUR SITE IS VERY HELPFUL! T H A N K S !!! :-)
The software on the archive is going to make my life here a fair bit
easier. Many thanks for the service!
Thanks for the reply, your site has been a great help for files!
First off, I would like to state that you are doing a great thing here.
You know how much time it saves everyone to have packages of precompiled
binaries? Wow, very sweet indeed. Kudo's to you.
Let me first say, totally awesome site. I'm a newbie to the Sun
platform and the info and precompiled binaries you have saved me a big
headache. Thanx again for having such a
helpful site. Keep up the good work!
Great site. Thanks for all your good work.
Steve - thanks for your help.
thank you!
I've downloaded some programs from your site (gcc, bash, flex and bison
for Solaris 2.5 and Solaris 7) and I've seen that a way to help you is
sending you "highly complimentary e-mail". Well, here it is! I'm deeply
impressed with the quality of the packages you offer: they install
quickly and work perfectly. A great work.
You've heard it before but what a handy resource! Thanks!
I think your site is great.
Thanks for this terrific site. It makes my life run smoother.
We now have emacs. Thanks for the quick and accurate response.
I very much appreciate your work!
Was one of the "several" sunfreeware.com?
Can i call you UNIX GOD? Thanks.
Thank You, Thank You, and Thank You!!
I just wanted to thank you for the hard work you have put into the
SunFreeware site.
Thanks a lot!
Great site!
Just wanted to say that your site has been unvaluable for me. I work
mostly in Linux and having this great source of GNU software saved my
life when working on Solaris.

time and endless hours of frustration at trying to get certain packages to
compile.
First of all i wanna thank you for a really good and useful site!
First off, I love www.sunfreeware.com :) I've been using it since it was
just for Solaris 2.5.1.
This is one of those complimentary email you discussed. I have used
your site a few times and always found what I needed.
thank you very much for having made TclTk8.1 available so quickly.
This is a -very- useful site. I really needed a compiled gcc. The link
was great, but w/o the faq, i would not have gotten it installed. thank
you very much.
Great job with the sunfreeware site. I just installed solaris 7 the
other day and am
enjoying learning. Glad I stumbled across your site.
Great collection you have here !
I was able to acquire the files this morning. Thank you for your time and

Thanks for a very useful website you have.
accrording to your little guide "Creating pkgadd Software Packages under
Solaris" at http://www.sunfreeware.com/ I managed to build a package
of my own little GPL'd program very easily!
Thank you very much for sharing your knowledge...
Its good to see in the list of freeware available
old standby's such as less, top and gzip. We have been
using them for a number of years now, installed on our
system with the pkgadd method.
I just wanted to let you know what a life/time saver your site is!
Thanks for the 20.2 emacs which installs in /opt/
Great for Sun employee's who do not "own" /usr/local.
It works. Thanks a lot !
Thank you for your reply. I now have
the latest version of top installed and working
without failure. My next move will be to look
into 'lxrun'.
I just wanted to drop you a line and say Thanks.
Your site has helped me through the years get software I need.
On top of this, your little doc showed me how to make those darn
packages. Now, I compile, test, and package everything. I defiantly
got some brownie points with my boss. Thanks.
I like the site and have used it for a couple of years.
I'm a grateful user of the Freeware for Solaris site and
have downloaded and used a number of your precompiled binaries.
Thanks for running a great site.
I want to thank you for doing this work. Its great!

I'm writing this mail.
Thanks for the suggestion. I was able to overcome the problem.
Hello Steve, Been to the -wonderful- sunfreeware.com site.
Great work. I use sunfreeware.com all the time.
Just installed a free copy of Solaris and then found out that there

No idea why we didnīt found these Internet pages although we looked around the whole net.
Just wanted to add my thanks to the tons of others you have received. I

Thanks for providing all the pre-built freeware for Solaris 7. It's a huge
benefit for us poor student types that can't afford SUNWspro compilers.
Without your site we'd be forced to jump through innumerable hoops just to
get a working compiler, but thanks to you I can just browse through your
archive and pull off a prepackaged gcc, along with a host of other stuff I
need. Keep up the good work.
Hello, Sir! I really appreciate for what you have done there on the
www.sunfreeware.com
Thanx. It must be helpful to me.
Thanx a lot.
God bless you.
First of all, thanks for a wonderful resource and excellent documentation.
You are doing a service to all Solaris users, and especially those like
me who are relatively new to Solaris and to system administration.
I have installed a good number of the programs already compiled
and put in package format on the SunFreeware site. They are
easy to install and can also be installed quickly as they do not
have to be compiled.
thank you very much for your work!
It saved me a lot of time, especially for the gcc package.
Really appreciate the response. Thank you.
I have been a big fan of yours for sometime. :)
I've been meaning to mail you for ages !!
As everyone else says The site is EXCELLENT one of the few Solaris sites
that you NEED !!
I'm just doing a complete re-install so I'm here to pick up all the
essentials (gcc etc etc) so I thought I'd say thank while I'm here.
Thank you for your reply.
Excellent job.
Thank you
Keep up the good work pal we'd be lost without you
Let me thank you for spending your time on compiling and saving the
developers their money.
Thanks for all the freestuff, much appreciated ;-)

workstations and servers here.
Thanks very much, this was very helpful.
thanx so much; very helpful.
Thanks, that did the trick.
Keep up this invaluable work - I have used your pkg's many times now.
I'm search for "imtools" software for Sparc Solaris2.5.1 .

Thank you very much.
I had download some source code and decompressed them.
It is really a software treasure-house, and you are the manager of it.
Thank you for this site, it is wonderful.
First I would like to thank you for what you have put together on
sunfreeware, I have found it useful.

Everything has turned out just fine.
Thanks Steve!
You are a great kid !
This is a phenomenally well laid out and useful site. I am coming
over from the Linux camp, and while Solaris is being a pain in the ***
at times, this site has been a very, very nice place to discover.
Probably the best site I've run across in many years. Keep up the good
work!!
Thank you for an extremely helpful site.
great work with sunfreeware.com !!!
Thank you for this good job.
Thank you very much for your support.
What a really wonderful site!!

your site made it barely a breeze.
Very nice site guy. I use it alot.
This WEB site (sunfreeware.com) is lovely.
THANKS FOR ALL YOUR WORK - YOU MY LIFE A LOT
EASIER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I poked around on your site and I love it. A friend on mine
told me about this archive today so now I am going to use this as a
reference point. Keep up the great work.
Thank you for the information. It is very useful to me.
Thanks. It worked like a charm.
Wonderful website! you save me alot of time to look for other places.
compliments,
Just wanted to express my appreciation for your web site of Solaris freeware.
I appreciate the work you guys are doing providing service.
great work, your efforts come in handy.
I am one of those inexperienced guys, who are compelled to help
administering a system with about 10 Sun Workstations. Numerous are the
times I tried to use source code of various programs to make it run and
ended up only frustrated. Of course if one spend a day or two, it's
possible almost anything running. However the issue is to do it within
minutes, or hours at most so that you have some time for your research
work also. www.sunfreeware.com is the first site I found (there may be
others, I don't know) with a comprehensive list of pre compiled programs
for Sun Solaris and the like. This is the way the things should be! It's
fun to try compiling a program spending a week occasionally. But having
bulk of the needed software in package format is unbelievably nice!
So THANKS!!
Keep up the good work...
Thank you for an excellent site.
Keep it up.
Great site, can't live without it :)
I would like to complement you on the "sunfreeware" page, it has
provided me with the tools that I required to begin to assemble my own
arsenal of GNU applications.
Subject: Highly complimentary email indicating how this project has helped me
Thanks very much for the effort on the sunfreeware .com site, I use your
packages quite a bit as I move from client to client and they all ask for
a subset of the packages to be installed.
Thanks for the wonderful site. I have used the program collection many
different times in my consulting work.
I've downloaded a number of your software and they have not only helped
me tremendously, but also have opened new avenues for me to discover and
research.
Thanks again for the great site. It is extremely useful.
thanks to your work you definitely reduced the struggle to get our new
sun-workstation up-to-date.
Very helpful, amazing.
this is really the best site for solaris users !
Loaded a lot of stuff the last years.
Thanks for all your work!
First off, thanks for providing Sun Freeware. I usually compile applications
myself, but your site is real handy when one needs something in a jiffy...
Thank you very much.
I have just made some vital use of your "sunfreeware" site. Thanx, it's
a Sysadmin's lifesaver! :)
It's sites like this and attitudes like yours that helps me to justify
sticking to all this "Old Technology" Unix stuff :-)
I find you site very useful. It has made my life easier on many occasions.
You've heard this before, but this is THE BEST solaris software site on
the Internet. Thanks for everything!
Thanks for the quick response, Steve, and for your efforts.
Congratulations for this web site which is really useful and
informative.
Thank you for such a terrific site. I appreciate all the
work that has went into the freeware site.
Thanks for the site. It's great for getting things done *now*
(especially when you're new to Solaris :) )
Just a quick note to let you know what a great resource your Sunfreeware.com
site is! I needed a couple utilities for a new server (tcsh and gzip),
searched the web and was referred to sunfreeware. The rest is history.
Thanks to your excellent instructions, I was up and running in < 10 minutes.
I also would like to thank you, the site www.sunfreeware.com has become almost essential for me to do my job effectively and I am not sure what I would do without it.
Sunfreeware is a great site, incredibly useful!! Thanks very much.
Thanks for making so much useful software available.
first of all the sunfreeware-service is absolutely great.
Very up-to-date freeware installing in /usr/local in
package-format: Dreams come true :)

And I personally want to thank you for saving Solar
